Uyuni is a small town located in the southwest of Potosí, where the history of the railroad remains almost like a photography of a scene of a Bolivian era in the 20th century.
This chronology continues to up until today in the Andean city, where tourist circuits show two important historical points of the Bolivian era: the Cementerio de Trenes (the Train Cemetery) and Pueblo Quemado (Burned Village, San Pedro de Quemes), representing a bitter aftertaste of a national adolescence, which attempted to build an identity, in a historically complicated century.
This town holds the most beautiful tourist attractions of the Andean area and is the gateway to all sectors that highlight the natural beauty of the Bolivian highlands: The Uyuni Salt Flats. It is why the name derives from the Aymara word “Uyu” that means “point of concentration”.
Called as the “Favorite Daughter of Bolivia”, Uyuni can be accessed from Potosí or from the north through the routes go through Oruro and La Paz.
The “La Joya Andina” airport receives daily flights from La Paz and there is a railway line which leads you directly from the city of La Paz to the historical and natural site.
At the exit of this city is the most visited tourist attraction all over Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni (Salt Desert of Uyuni), an immense white sea of salt.
The visit to the Salar de Uyuni is the most complete experience for getting to know more about this area, with the Uyuni Salt Flats being the main attraction of the tour, a while sea called Tunupa by the community members who, for thousands of years considered it as sacred.
The circuit begins in the heart of that city where the offer of tourist services is complete and varied, and it also marks the starting point of a route that without a doubt is the most surprising that exists in Bolivia.
It continues at the entrance to Salar, where, 21 kilometers from Uyuni, the community of Colchani allows the direct access to the inner paths of the Sea of Sal. From here you are guided to Incahuasi, an island studded with giant cacti. The Isla del Pescado (Island of the Fish) is a piece of land of curious forms and other attractions for the optical delight of the tourist.
The tour goes to Tahua, at the foot of the Tunupa volcano, a natural giant from whose heights you can see the complete panorama of the area. Tunupa is an achachila (deity) for the communities of that region, about which legends of mythical magic, giants, and supernatural beings are told.
The circuit runs along the banks of the Salar, visiting the communities, learning about their customs, ancient landscapes, archaeological remains, and admiring the night sky in which the stars seem to be closer than they really are.
The tourist circuit of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve, following the route that traced by the ancestors, is composed of lagoons of colours, mountains of surreal landscape, and an immutable, desert of an imposing white plateau.
Inside this plateau, you find the Laguna Colorada and the Laguna Verde, the first containing red carmine waters full of parihuanas (Andean flamingos), and the second, crowded by the vision of the volcano Licancabur. Other attractions of the Reserve are the Dali Desert, a landscape that recalls the works of the Catalan painter and the Aguas Termales de Polques (hot springs of Polques), where tourists go to recover their health through the contact with volcanic waters.
